Imagine yourself with 16 people slowly increasing to a height of 390 feet in 90 seconds or less. Once at the top of the Giant Drop you wait...until you are released to free fall for 5 seconds at a speed of 84 miles per hour. After those short 5 seconds the four carts are quickly stopped by a magnetic breaking system.

The Magnetic Breaking system is a relatively new technology and has an uprising popularity due to its high degree of safety. The only disadvantage of the magnetic breaks is that it does not bring the cart to a complete stop.

The Giant Drop uses magnets to stop.

HOW IT WORKS
Advantages:
Magnetic brakes are made up of one or two rows of neodymium magnets. When a metal fin passes between the rows of magnets, electrical currents are generated in the fin, which creates a magnetic field opposing the fin's motion. These eddy currents are exposed to a changing

magnetic field, which cause a repulsive or attractive force. If you were to be looking for these objects on the ride, you would find the braking elements on the
track and fin located underneath or amongst the sides of the train.
The Magnetic braking system is most known for its silent, flight like, smooth deceleration that occurs to the passengers don’t experience a “bumpy ride”. By not using any friction or suffering from wear and tear, these breaks are 100% trusted and have no margin for error.

Disadvantages:
As we mentioned earlier, Magnetic breaks can’ neither completely stop a ride but can help a frictional block break be pushed together to stop the ride. The Fins and Magnets may not be disengaged, but retracted so the fins don’t pass between the magnets.
Extra Info:
Most rides will have a magnetic breaking system located on the launch track in the event of a rollback.
The Magnetic breaking system was created in 1995 by a company called Intamin. Intamin was founded by Reinhold and Robert Spieldiener and their friend Ali Saiko.
By placing the magnetic breaking system into not only rides similar to The Giant Drop, it increased the rate of safety and lowered maintenance costs drastically.
